Fuck yeah, Sharing Knife! I've only read the first two so far and I really enjoyed them. =)

I decided to finally pick up some of her books per Conni's recs and the library had the first volume of the quartet, which made my decision pretty easy! Thank god I started reading them on a break, I got pretty sucked in.

Oooh, I have heard nothing but good about Lois McMaster Bujold, but I have never read any of her stuff. Would you recommend her?

I would, but I'm biased XD

The question is more this: do you like fantasy or science fiction more? The Chalion books and the Sharing Knife books are fantasy (Chalion more in the quasi-medieval setting we know and love, SK in a sort of Old West/Pioneers setting).

If SF is your thing, the Vorkosigan series is fabulous. Which VK book to start with is another much-debated topic among fans, and it depends a lot on your preferences. Do you like SF with a touch of romance? Get Cordelia's Honor. Do you like SF with a touch of political intrigue? Start with Young Miles. My personal favorite is Memory, but that's the ... 10th? book, and IMO you won't get the impact of the story without already knowing and caring about the characters, or catch all the references to previous books.

The Vorkosigan novella The Mountains of Mourning is available online at Baen's Free Library. (This is a close second or third for me, contending strongly with the Vor Game.)

I'm glad I could help XD I'll gladly blather on about Bujold and her books given the slightest provocation.

And yeah, the Sharing Knife books are out and out romance, but still with plenty of action. The Chalion books (well, Curse and Paladin) have a romance happening... OK, backing up. Curse and Paladin are primarily fantasy stories (in a quasi-medieval-Spain), and romances occur during them. For SK, LMB set out to write A Romance in a fantasy setting. They're both romancey, but SK follows more of the romance tropes than Curse or Paladin.

The VK book A Civil Campaign borrows heavily from Georgette Heyer. It's essentially the story of Miles wooing a woman, in the only way he knows how. Hijinks ensue, also much facepalming on the part of the reader.

I also really like CJ Cherryh. She's written approximately eleventy million books, mostly SF, though there are about a dozen fantasy books in there. She's not so much with the romance aspect, but Cyteen has a gay couple. I have about 2 4'-long shelves devoted to her books.

I would! It was a great fantasy story with a nice amount of romance. I haven't read anything other than this series, but I have heard plenty of good things.
