It only took me 4 days this time! Sweet! Maybe I'll even get some GCH pictures up before this weekend.

We left a little late on Friday, finally pulling out of Chapel Hill around 2:30 or 2:35. We stopped for dinner at a rest area just into South Carolina. Picnic! It was awesome, minus the mosquitoes. We had some problems finding the hotel in Port Wentworth (Georgia), and the check engine light came on (insta-stress! Get a little lost in an unfamiliar state in the dark and have warning lights in your vehicle come on!), but we got there without too much trouble. The lady at the hotel commented that none of us looked old enough to rent a hotel room, and was all ‘you don’t have an ID?’ when [livejournal.com profile] intrepidcat said all she had was her passport, but didn’t make a big deal about the room being in my name even though I was, by their policies, underage. The hotel room was great.

That night, I stayed up for a while working on a book of puzzles, sketches, poems, and assorted cool things from our student newspaper to give the boys. I woke up early (7:30) and worked on the book some more. We woke Rachael up around 8:40. The hotel had a free continental breakfast, but no seats in which to eat it, so we all ate standing up. We filled up the cooler illegally with their free ice and rolled out around 9:45 or 10. We stopped at the Florida Welcome Center for free orange juice and a commemorative picture.

Some of the small towns in Florida once we got off of 95 were scary—lots of McCain/Palin signs. There were also two weird billboards with a town name, distance, and warning about a speed trap. When we got to the towns mentioned, there were indeed cars pulled over.

We got there at like 1:35 (finally!) and went to eat about 20 minutes later with [livejournal.com profile] endofhistory and [livejournal.com profile] adaydreamspills at Mellow Mushroom. There was a swim meet in the Dome before the concert, so there were lots of people wandering around in orange and blue. Mellow Mushroom was fine—the food wasn't anything spectacular, but it was fun.

We got back to the venue around 4 or 4:30. I took most of my stuff up to the front of the venue, where we waited and I worked on finishing the book. I did, and then ran back and forth to car a few times, to put away my sharp objects and then, later, to stress over the ticket for [livejournal.com profile] centraslayer. There was some stress regarding our tickets and m&g, because will call wasn’t going to open until 5:30. There were also like 3 groups there for m&g, so lots of confusing lines. Our line was finally called, so I went and stood where told. No tickets yet! Zack had us stand in two lines, with people who had actually won in one line and their friends who were either in NDP and didn’t get m&g or weren’t in NDP at all. He said they might be able to get in.

[livejournal.com profile] intrepidcat came by while I was about to call her to ask about keys to the car, and while Zack was talking to us. I tried to get her to come back through frantic hand gestures--success! I relayed Zack's instructions. Around 5:28, I left the line to go wait at will call, and they didn’t open the window until 5:31. Then, the girl at the window couldn’t find my tickets, and asked if I was sure I had already bought them. Um, yes? I pulled out my confirmation email, and upon reading it she told me that I was supposed to have gone to pick them up at an FYE or something. I explained that I was from NC, and couldn’t, and she said that they needed to print my tickets. Cue impatient waiting on my part.

Rachael came out while I was waiting and told me that Zack had handed out the wristbands, and that he had given us one extra. I finally get the ticket and we return to the line, where [livejournal.com profile] intrepidcat had her foot on my wristband and informed me that Zack said I needed to pick it up myself. I did so. She then told me that I had to decide who got the extra wristband. Well, fuck that. I told them to decide amongst themselves, but we eventually rolled a die, and Rachael won. Of course, Zack came back with extra wristbands anyway, so [livejournal.com profile] intrepidcat and [livejournal.com profile] centraslayer (who he had been told was a part of my group, to which he responded that internet friends don’t count) got to go after all. We waited in line some more. We were finally pulled into a room (which was really just one of the lobby areas for the Dome) and given the speech. Apparently, the needle incident happened at an English show. We were near the front of the line, but I couldn't really see anything near the table because I was behind people. Suddenly, the line started moving. They had come in and I had missed it! And then the line moved really quickly, too, so I had no time to compose myself.

They were all really sweet. Brendon complimented the doodle I did on the front of the book, Ryan said he liked my shirt, and Jon piped in with some trivia on Threadless (from whom I'd bought my shirt) and Bob Nanna, who writes the songs that accompany some of the tees. He mentioned one of Nanna's old bands, Hey Mercedes. (Before Hey Mercedes, Nanna was in a band called Braid, from whom Fall Out Boy ganked the title Grand Theft Autumn.) I was in a daze by the time I got to Spencer, and had been holding up the line a little, so it's probably a good thing that he just said he hoped I enjoyed the show.

After m&g, people with floor seats were told to line up. We were given a second wristband and an X on our tickets (for floor), and were led inside by Zack. We were at the front of the line--such responsibility! He showed us where other people were going down the stairs, and told us to lead the way. Instead of doing so, we swerved off to go to the merch table. Oops? I think we confused the line a little bit. Then Rachael and I went to the restroom, so we missed seeing (but not hearing!) the first two songs by The Cab. The first one was Vegas Skies, I think.

I absolutely loved the entire show. The Cab is much more energetic when they have a larger stage to bounce around--while Singer mostly stayed in one place at Greene Street, I think I'm lucky to have any clear pictures of him at all after this show. Ian continues to be adorable and amazing at guitar. Cash continues to awkwardly play to the amps more than the audience. Cash, we like your stupid face!

<

This is my only decent picture of Marshall. He was too far away to get a nice zoom, and then he played with his head down on top of that.

I wasn't very familiar with either the Plain White T's or Dashboard Confessional before I bought the tickets, but I enjoyed both sets. The Dashboard singer's voice is much less whiny live, and their performance was really high energy. And then they covered So What, of course, which was amazing. The Cab got a lot of love from both PWT and DC, which was great.

Ian helped DC cover So What.

He seemed very small in comparison.

They were adorkable. I think there were haircut-buddy jokes made at some point.

Seeing Panic live was absolutely amazing. This was my first time, because I didn't start listening to them until this summer (after the HCT came through my area). They were all really engaging. Brendon's faces were great, as was Jon's dancing. Spencer whaled on his drums, and Ryan was nowhere near as awkward as I was expecting. Jon was barefoot!

Here's our tentative set list, reconstructed mostly from my video:
We’re So Starving
Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off
When the Day Met the Night
Camisado
But It’s Better If You Do
Do You Know What I’m Seeing?
Northern Downpour
Nine In the Afternoon
(I Want You interlude) I Write Sins, Not Tragedies
Mad As Rabbits
Shout!

They also played That Green Gentleman and She's a Handsome Woman, but I can't remember where they fell.

Brendon played drums with Spencer for When the Day Met the Night. He got very...into it.

Barefeet!

Aaand then my favorite part of Shout!(EDIT: if you go to the YouTube page, you can watch it in high quality by clicking 'watch in high quality' beneath the video):

All told, there were very few disappointing parts. I found the MTV guy annoying, and my car got egged outside of our hostel Saturday night. But that? That was the only bad. We spoke not-too-jokingly of just skipping our classes and road tripping to Texas, but we did, unfortunately, have to return home.

We were facing Brendon's piano, like in the second row of bleachers on the very end like RIGHT BY his piano. I got a sweet video of When the Day Met the Night.

How did we *miss* you? I know I stared at that set of bleachers enough times during the break. We were like 5 seats in from your end, 6 rows back from the stage.

I have no idea! I spotted you guys. But seriously we were RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF BRENDON. And [livejournal.com profile] adaydreamspills took a video of Brendon undoing the water bottle with his teeth XD

Aww, I like the one dude's suit (and I'm sure your bandom friends reading this will shake their fists at me for saying "the one dude" so just insert his name and pretend I know it) and his sideburns.

They look younger than I expected! Maybe it's just them looking very hip - most of the bands I like are either old or too nutty to be stylish. I'm still glad the trip worked out so well.

Does no one care about photographing/filming big concerts anymore, now that cameras are so small and ubiquitous? I remember having to smuggle a camera into a Yes show just so I could take it backstage afterwards, and the last time I went to a big arena/amphitheater type venue they had a lot of no camera signs. That was several years ago, though.

He's the one who liked my shirt!

They are pretty young--the youngest just turned 21 in September, and the oldest is 23.

Photography can be weird. Most venues have a blanket ban so that when people show up with cameras they can't complain they weren't warned if they're taken away, but most of the bands I've seen recently don't care as long as it's not professional-quality equipment. Actual video cameras are still taboo, but everyone can take shitty video with their camera or phone so it's hard to enforce. Panic has said that they will always allow cameras at their performances, and you're expected to have one for meet & greet, so I wasn't worried about it for this.

You got backstage after a Yes show? Because that is pretty awesome.

My backstage Yes story is pretty awesome so I'll share it here:

In the summer of 2000 right before my first year at UNC they came through Nashville supporting The Ladder, which wasn't that great of an album but they put on a great show anyway so I was really excited to go. I saw them in '94 and '97 or so and figured I wouldn't get that many chances to see them in the future.

My dad asked me that day if I wanted to be crazy and hang out in the lobby of the Vanderbilt Plaza hotel in an attempt to see them; we'd seen in the paper on a previous tour that they stayed there. So we got there around 3 or 4 pm and sat reading in the lobby, and suddenly HOLY SHIT it's Steve Howe wheeling luggage through the lobby! I was completely paralyzed and watched him go by me, and then Chris Squire came by... they were going in the bar and I was unable to move or anything. I can't really go up to people and talk to them in the best of situations and this was too much for me. But after a few minutes Jon Anderson came in and was checking in, and he's so tiny and friendly looking that I felt ok walking up to him and saying hello.

And he was SO sweet, and gave me a hug (I didn't ask or anything - I just went up and said "hi, your music has meant so much to me" and he just gave me this giant hug) and talked to me for a few minutes. He got my name and said he'd have backstage passes waiting at the Will Call booth for us at the show. There were actually three passes waiting for my dad and I, but I ran into a good friend at the show and gave her the other one.

I honestly don't even remember much about the concert, but of course it was awesome and afterwards we got to mill around backstage with a small group of other fans. I got everyone to sign an album for me except for Jon - he came in later than the other guys and - I am totally serious here - immediately said "THERE YOU ARE!" gave me another hug, asked how I'd enjoyed the show, and said he'd been thinking about me.
I think my brain just shorted out at that point. I have a photo that my dad took of tiny-ass Jon Anderson giving me a huge bear hug, and it's pretty great.
I have had other encounters with Yes members and they've all been extremely positive. =) If only I could get a time machine and catch a show on one of the early 70s tours... that would be amazing.

It's too bad that I didn't get to meet him after I'd gotten my extremely dorky Olias of Sunhillow tattoo and changed my middle name to Ranyart... I wonder what he'd think of that.

That's one of the most amazing things I've ever heard. Wow. It's awesome that he was so nice, above and beyond the general politeness to fans.

So I know that before I was all "Eh, Brendon" but now I am all "OMG BRENDONS LITTLE FACE" - oh, what a concert can do to a girl.

And I wanted to punch that announcer in the face. A lot. What was up with his rambling about a "musical spring break" and going to a pol in LV??? Ack.

Oh Zach, internet friends totally count D:

He was really good at performing, that's for sure--some bands, the singers just 'eh, whatever,' but he got pretty into it. So much energy!

Yeah, just because it's a college campus in Florida and you're from MTV, it doesn't mean that it's Spring Break.

exactly!

Thank you for sharing these! Do you mind if I link to your album and post a couple of your pics in [livejournal.com profile] thecab_fbr? We have had a severe lack of pics of Ian's haircut until now. :P

Yeah, the boy has serious hair, and he refuses any sort of product. I have to stop myself from sneaking up behind him with Biosilk in my hands. Thanks for sharing! :D

yay meet and greet! It was definitely amazing. I think I was either mildly stressed or elated for the entire bit leading up to the show, though. I tend to be at least a little laid back? Minus any bouncing around to music that I do.

Jon is for some reason holding on to the neck of Ryan's guitar while Ryan does something with his pick with his own hands? Which is to say I have no clue, and don't remember the incident happening at all (minus the picture I have).
