Of Montreal show 10/7/2008
Oct. 8th, 2008 06:06 pmSo last night I went to see Of Montreal at the Carolina Theatre. We thought we were pressing out luck on time--we were parking around 7:46, and the show started at 8--but the time that would normally be filled with an opener was just...nothing. So we had plenty of time! The show finally started around 8:40, and it was amazing from there on out. I had never seen Of Montreal in concert before, and hadn't looked up past concerts before going.
I hadn't dressed up--I always dress up for shows, because I fear the judgment potato--and I totally should have. People had on awesome makeup and actual, honest-to-god costumes. It was great. And that was just the audience! The band was even better, and is clearly what inspired the audience.
They played almost non-stop for two hours, with minimal banter, even. I think he paused once to ask how we were doing, and then there was some audience interaction before the encore. If Kevin needed to change, the band would just keep playing. Awesome!
The set and the stage show (my first ever!) were both great. The video was interesting. There weren't really any minuses, except that it was a seated venue. I mean, we stood up, but chairs. Yeah.
Stage show! It was great! The curtain rose and most of the band was visible, if I recall correctly, minus Kevin (the lead singer). The had on costumes! It was awesome! One guitarist and a bassist were on the bottom of the stage, while a keyboardist/guitarist and a drummer/bassist and a drummer were all raised above it. They had this screen constructed to be a right angle with a stage inside the angle that they projected things onto and wheeled around with small set pieces and dancers, etc on it. That was an awkward explanation. Whatever, it was great. Look at the pictures. Kevin was on that, inside a little gold litter. There were back up dancers/performers/actors. Bits of the show that were particularly memorable: Old West card game; Pope (cardinal? something Catholic and religious) with the sexy nuns; the tiny gold shorts (and oh, they were); fake suicide onstage, complete with noose and red bodypaint blood; the centaur who wasn't as sexy as the satyr; and the foam coffin. The encore was delayed because the lead singer was covered in foam (shaving cream?). This was the other bit of banter--one of them said that if anyone had a towel, they could play another song, but right then Kevin was covered in shit.
At one point, there were 5 guitar-shaped instruments being played (I fail at counting strings from any distance, and that's the only way I can tell). And a drummer.
Here, have some pictures! I didn't take any of them, as I didn't have a camera, but someone on flickr was crazy fast.
I just. You guys. They were sort of ridiculous, and definitely ridiculously awesome. There were some kinks in the stage show, but it was such a complex show that that's no surprise, especially as this was the first date of their new tour.
Of Montreal! love!

Date: 2008-10-08 10:50 pm (UTC)It was crazy! I think this post is one of the most incoherent things I've ever written, but there was so much going on that I'm still processing it.
