Concert Report: Fall Out Boy at the O2 Arena, March 6th 2009
This past weekend I took the bus down to London and saw Fall Out Boy at the O2 arena (as well as doing my tourist thing).
I woke up at 4:30 that morning to finish the shirt I had made and to finish packing. My bus left at 6:30. Around 10:30 we had finally made it through all the traffic to the Victoria Coach Station. I had decided to try and see some stuff in the Victoria area before dropping my bag at the hostel, as Greenwich (where the O2 arena and the hostel are) is not well-connected to the Underground. There's just one stop, up by the arena and far away from my hostel, and I didn't even know about it when making my plans. I managed to see a decent amount before giving up (agh, my back!) and catching the train to Greenwich, where I promptly took a nap.
I had Early Entry, so I needed to be there no later than 5:30. Because I wanted to get the best possible place, I got there at 4:30. First thing I did was buy a shirt--I was surprised, if very grateful, that the merch booth was already open. I wanted a tour tshirt with the dates on the back, but the guy selling them pushed the girl's cut and didn't mention that it was date-less. Ah, well.
I was the 9th person in the EE line, which I only remember because it was Sharpied onto my hand. Cue the wait. The people around me all seemed very nice, if quite a bit younger. There was commiseration regarding AA and how they make mistakes in all countries.

They finally let us in (after moving the line a few times) just before/after 6:30. Sound check apparently ran late. They took our tickets, which was a bummer, and said we'd get them back after the show. Um, no. No, we didn't. Possibly I could have if I'd remembered to ask, but I didn't, and no ticket for me.
I was on the barrier, a little right of true center but close enough it didn't make any real difference. There was more of a gap between the barrier and the stage than I was expecting. While we were waiting, they taped up the set list right. below. me. Actually, they taped them up in several locations, but the one in front of me was bent so you could sort of read it. I took a picture to aid the cause.

Also, shout out to the super-nice girl who was to my left and told me to keep my purse between my ribs and the barrier. I never, ever would have known to do that, and it definitely saved me some bruises. I'm sorry you were pulled out, and hope you're ok and caught the rest of the show with no problems.
Hey Monday was cute and energetic. I enjoyed their set and antics even though I'm not familiar with their music (beyond that one single--Homecoming?). After their set, people started being pulled from the pit in large numbers (or so it seemed to me, as I kept ducking to let security do their job).

Pretty much the same for Kids in Glass Houses, although I liked their music more. The lead singer reeeally liked his mic. He was twirling it, looping the cord around his neck, all sorts of stuff for the whole set. Also, they were snappily dressed.

Security was actually really good about passing out water. It was also great to see them pushing the O2 douche who was trying to sell water bottles to us out of the way. Really, dude, how are we supposed to get to our money? It was a wicked crush of bodies, and there was no way it was happening. Also, why would I pay L2 for your bottled water when I can just get free water from the nice people who actually care about us?
There was the predictable gap before Fall Out Boy came on. I'm not sure how I feel about the fact that I recognized their crew--they post the videos, but I search them out to watch them. Hm. Anyway, they finally entered to a light show with FIRE. Ouch, guys, that was kind of hot. But awesome!
(HQ at YouTube is the best way to watch all the videos)
Patrick really got into playing, while Joe and Pete sort of paced around the stage in between periods of standing and/or climbing on amps to entreat the audience to do something. Pete seemed kind of tired? IDK, I've never seen them before, so I have no idea what the norm is.
Things:
-Cassadee came out and sang during Sugar.
-The back of Pete's bass said "The best party ever--so far."
-When he introduced Lullabye he said "this is for my favorite person on the planet."
-He said She's My Winona was "about a tattoo Johnny Depp got in the 80s" and that "we tried playing this song before but we fucked it up pretty egregiously."
Set List:
Thnks Fr Th Mmrs

Saturday

Hey Monday came down front during Saturday to watch while their bassist filled in for Pete.

The outside of the O2 Arena--and that was my night!
EDIT: I forgot to show off the shirt I made! I designed it, cut the stencil out of freezer paper, and used spray-on fabric paint and bleach with the stencil. The original design has a lot more text and looks like a movie poster--beneath 'America's Suitehearts' I had 'DOING LINES OF DUST AND SWEAT JUST TO FEEL LIKE YOU!' in smaller text, and under 'BOYCOTT LOVE' I had 'CHANGE WILL COME/03.06.09' in smaller text. At the bottom was 'Mr. Sandman*H. Shoe Crab*Mr. Benzedrine*Donnie the Catcher' in the style of movie poster acting credits, with the first names stacked above the surnames. Alas, it was not to be--I didn't have the time, and I thought the text was too small to stencil well, anyway.
