VidUKon 2021: A different framing (vidshow)

I VJ'd my first themed show at VUK today; here's the playlist and some notes.

A different framing

Highlighting the (re)framing of source, character, meaning, and point of view.

  1. Digital Witness by Sisabet | Twin Peaks: The Return
Framing can help us understand what happened...

  2. Vogue by Luminosity | 300
...or what we wish had happened.

  3. Meaning by newkidfan | Teen Wolf
It can compare different perspectives of familiar events.

  4. Sound of Her Wings by absternr | Sandman
Some vids break out of the source's framing entirely...

  5. Someday by AurumCalendula | DCU
...creating movement where there was none by panning, zooming, and cropping...

  6. Your Mother by ghost_lingering | Saga
...and even editing images together to create frames-within-frames.

  7. 5A1C by angelface | Bakemonogatari
External source can be used to great effect when reframing, expanding the world of the vid.

  8. Post Blue by obsessive24 | Firefly/Serenity
Original source can perform the same function when edited in as in-universe video or photographs.

  9. Poiesis by lim | Person of Interest
Some vids combine both techniques to expand the source to a new POV.

  10. Lend Me Your Teeth by Trelkez | Doctor Who
Framing can allow a vidder to tell the story from the monster's POV...

  11. It Follows in Five Pieces by kiki_miserychic | It Follows
...or from both the pursuer and the pursued...

  12. Landslide by milly | HP
...or even from the perspective of the setting itself.

  13. Hey Ho by thuviaptarth | MCU
Vids can reframe the relationship between the highest grossing film franchise and the military.

  14. Masters of War by bironic | SGA
They can reframe the good guys and the villains.

  15. On the Prowl by sisabet and sweetestdrain | Multi
They can even reframe our own desires.

I was inspired to do this show by newkidfan's vid Meaning, which I've been fascinated with since 2013. When I first saw it I was so struck by the technique and how newkidfan used it to great effect to compare and contrast Derek and Stiles' POVs, and every re-watch has been more and more rewarding.

I had a short list of vids I wanted to share with it and got some excellent suggestions on Twitter and from friends (thank you to [twitter.com profile] imbirint, [personal profile] thuviaptarth, and [twitter.com profile] charloween; apologies to anyone I've missed!). Then building out from there crystallized 5 different riffs on framing that I wanted to address, which narrowed my further searches nicely.

I do wish I'd had/made space for more lightheartedness in the show; there were some great examples, but after some struggle I decided I needed to skip some of them so there wasn't too much tonal back-and-forth in the show. Structuring it by aspects of framing meant that I didn't have as much leeway when handling emotional differences.

Overall I'm super pleased with it, though! Thank you again to everyone who suggested vids, to [twitter.com profile] alpheratz_is and [twitter.com profile] charloween for looking over my playlist and offering excellent suggestions, and to all the vidders who allowed me to feature their work.
